The St Peter’s 6: Our Principles for Outstanding Teaching & Learning

At St Peter’s, high quality, inclusive teaching is the foundation of everything we do. Our approach is guided by The St Peter’s 6 - a set of evidencebased strategies that every teacher uses in every classroom to ensure all students can learn, grow and succeed.

These six principles shape our practice and help us create learning environments where all students feel known, valued and supported.

The St Peters 6

1. Modelling & Explanation

We believe students learn best when they are shown how to think, not just what to do.
Teachers provide clear explanations, break down complex ideas and model highquality examples so that students understand exactly what success looks like and how to get there.

2. Deliberate Practice

Learning happens through purposeful repetition and carefully designed practice.
Teachers plan activities that allow students to apply new knowledge, build fluency and develop longterm understanding.

3. Checking for Understanding

We don’t assume students have understood—we check.
Through questioning, miniwhiteboards, live marking and other techniques, teachers regularly assess understanding and adapt their instruction in real time to support every learner.

4. Feedback

Effective feedback moves learning forward.
Students receive timely, specific guidance that helps them reflect on their progress, improve their work and take ownership of their learning. Feedback is precise, actionable and supportive.

5. Questioning

Highquality questioning deepens thinking.
Teachers use a range of strategies—from cold calling to probing followups—to stretch students’ understanding, encourage rich discussion and ensure that every learner is engaged.

6. Relationships & Knowing Our Students

Strong relationships are at the heart of excellent teaching.
We take the time to understand each student—their strengths, interests, barriers and goals. By knowing our learners well, we create classrooms that are inclusive, nurturing and ambitious for all.

Assessment & Feedback

Assessment is integral to learning at St Peter’s. We use a combination of formative assessment in lessons and summative checkpoints to monitor progress. You can find information about your child’s assessment points click here

Feedback is focused, timely and actionable, helping students understand what they are doing well and what they need to do next.

Support & Intervention

We are committed to ensuring every student succeeds. Our targeted support programmes help learners who may need additional guidance. These include:

  • Literacy and numeracy interventions
  • Homework club and revision support
  • SEND provision tailored to individual needs

Our aim is to remove barriers so that every student can flourish.
