Careers service:

There has never been a time when careers guidance has been as important for young people as it is today. At St Peters we have a vital role to play in preparing our students for the next stage of their education or training and beyond. Our students will be embarking upon a career pathway, which is more challenging and complex than that faced by previous generations. With global opportunities, increasing technological advances along with the greater choices of education, training and employment, we recognise our students may have several careers over their working lives and could potentially work in a career that does not currently exist. Our aim therefore, is to ensure they leave St Peters as resilient, confident young people equipped with the skills to manage the choices, changes and transitions ahead of them.

Our extensive careers education programme ensures students in years 7-13 receive timely information, advice and guidance regarding the full range of options available to assist them to make informed decisions about their next steps in education, training or employment. We encourage students to think broadly and ambitiously about their future education and career options and to consider current labour market conditions to ensure they make well informed decisions about their futures. This is strengthened by excellent relationships and contact with independent careers advisers, local and national employers, training providers, colleges, universities and school alumni.

We actively encourage and inspire our students to be independent and take ownership of their career plans, whilst considering all available options so that they are able to select the best way forward for their aspirations, abilities, interests and learning styles

Careers education at St Peters is not just a stand-alone strand; it is thoroughly integrated into every area of the school and woven into the school curriculum. Our whole school approach to careers education allows students to link what they are learning in the classroom and the skills they are developing to those valued by employers in the world of work.

Students in Years 7 to 13 use the Unifrog careers platform to explore a wide range of future pathways, from university courses and apprenticeships to employment opportunities. Starting in Year 7, students begin by identifying their interests and strengths through interactive quizzes and personality profiles. As they progress through school, they use the platform to research career options, track their skills development, and build a comprehensive portfolio of achievements. By Year 13, students are using Unifrog to refine their post-18 plans, write personal statements or CVs, and apply for higher education or apprenticeships, ensuring they are well-prepared for their next steps.

Our programme has been developed in line with the eight Gatsby Benchmarks for ensuring best practice:

  1. A stable careers’ programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

The Parents Pledge campaign aims to get parents and carers more actively involved with their local school to help develop and further enhance the careers programmes on offer to students.

Parents and carers are without doubt the biggest influencers for young people making decisions about their future education and careers choices.  By working with the school’s careers team, parents and carers can share their own knowledge and experiences to help students understand the skills and qualifications they need to enter the world of work.

There are numerous ways to pledge your support and the range of your commitment can vary depending on your availability but whatever you are willing to help with will make a vital difference.

Some examples of ways to get involved are listed below:

  • Mock interview days
  • Assembly talks
  • Workplace visits
  • Work experience opportunities
  • Careers fairs
  • Support of curriculum activities
