KS3 Geography
Our KS3 curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world, that students can take forward through their lives. Our curriculum is knowledge rich, with the aim of enriching our students understanding of the world’s diverse places, people and processes.
The aim of our KS3 curriculum is to ensure that ALL students develop a contextual knowledge of place, getting students to think locally at the beginning of the key stage and then broadening that to a global outlook by the end of KS3.
Students will understand the different processes that create different features and landforms around the world, and be able to make links between them in terms of variations over space and time.
Students will develop and become competent in a range of geographical skills, such as the ability to interpret resources such as maps, diagrams and photographs. They will be able to communicate geographical information through numeracy, as well as geographical information systems. Students will also experience fieldwork, where they can collect, analyse and communicate a range of data that will allow them to deepen their understanding of the geographical processes.
KS4 Geography
Our KS4 curriculum is an exciting and relevant curriculum, within a context of a balanced framework of physical and human themes and investigates the link between them.
In Year 10 and 11, students will travel the world from their classroom, exploring case studies in the United Kingdom (UK), higher income countries (HICs), newly emerging economies (NEEs) and lower income countries (LICs). Topics of study include climate change, poverty, deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use. Students are also encouraged to understand their role in society, by considering different viewpoints, values and attitudes.
Students will develop and demonstrate a range of geographical skills, including cartographic, graphical, numerical and statistical skills, throughout their KS4 study. Additionally, the KS4 curriculum allows the students to develop skills in understanding and using qualitative and quantitative data and also developing their literacy skills to formulate enquiry and argument.
Information for year 9 students, who are currently considering their GCSE options for next year.
Geography is a facilitating subject which addresses a wide range of dynamic issues. In the 21st Century the role of the geographer has become more important in society. The Covid-19 pandemic is a current situation that can be analysed and investigated through the ideas and concepts we learn in geography. Even before this pandemic, discussions on sustainability and the way we deal with environmental issues are still seen as one of the greatest challenges facing the world. Over the course of many decades issues that have dominated our conscious minds such as war in the Middle East, deforestation in the Amazon and the exponential growth of world population has led to Geography being seen as a subject that is highly regarded by universities and employers. The ideas, concepts and skills that we learn at GCSE Geography will stay with you throughout your life and equip you well in any job/careers that you wish to pursue.
