GCSE Options at St Peter's

Congratulations. You have reached the next stage of your education journey and it’s time to think about your key stage four options. You may have some ideas about what you want to do in the future, or you may have no idea at all. The most important thing is to make choices which will suit your abilities and interests, and which will allow you to keep your options open.

At key stage four all students will continue the ‘core’ subjects of English, English Literature, Mathematics, Core Science, Additional Science and R.E. We will also ask you to choose one of History or Geography or French or Spanish or Computer Science. You will also be able to make some choices (of another two subjects) from the range of courses we offer. We’ll do our best to offer you your first choices but will ask you to rank your chosen subjects in case this is not possible.

Talk to your parents or guardians, your form tutor and your teachers about your options. Your choices need to suit you, your interests and your skills. Look at the A-levels you might need, so that you don’t give up a subject which is essential for the career you are interested in. For example, if you are considering studying medicine, you will need to study sciences (especially Chemistry and probably Mathematics) at A-level.

If you have no career in mind, look for options that will give you plenty of choice. If you are interested in a specific career, you can look for information on the internet to help you make sensible decisions. The careers page on the school website provides links to some excellent careers websites to help you do some personal research. Don’t make option choices based on what your friends are doing; they may have completely different skills and ambitions!

Our school careers adviser and independent careers advisers are important sources of guidance. Request an interview with them through your tutor or drop into the Careers Office (in the Alexander block) during any break or lunch on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
