Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) Guidance

Guidance for parents on delivery programme of Relationships and Sex Education at St Peter’s.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is delivered through the RE and Science departments and via the Citizenship programme delivered by pastoral staff.

Year 7:

  • In Citizenship and PHSE lessons, students will look at the following topics; needs, wants and wellbeing.
  • Students have access to various levels of support if they are having relationship concerns/problems. Support is provided via Y11 mentors, form tutors, head of year, other pastoral lead staff, Student Support Service where we have access to counsellors and mental health nurses.
  • In Citizenship, students explore the legalities of using social networking with reference to appropriate conduct on line

Year 8:

  • One of the Science modules taught in Y8 includes the topics of human reproductive systems, hormones and growing up, the menstrual cycle, STIs, HIV and Aids.
  • During the ‘Development days’ in June of Year 8, students are invited to attend a talk delivered by LIFE organisation, a UK based pro-life educational and caring charity. The talk is centred around giving the students information about RSE but the message is centred in Christian beliefs. Parents will be contacted by letter before this talk takes place.
  • In Citizenship, students explore the legalities of using social networking with reference to appropriate conduct on line

Year 9:

  • In the summer terms of Y9, students start their RE GCSE course with the module entitled ‘Values and Commitments’. This covers many of the issues of RSE and is delivered within a religious context. For a detailed look at the topics covered, please click here to download more information.
  • In Citizenship work and the ‘Preparation for working life course’ students explore issues within the following modules; personal awareness, relationships and the differences between people.
  • In Citizenship, students explore the legalities of using social networking with reference to appropriate conduct on line

Year 10:

  • Again, in the summer terms, the RE GCSE module ‘Values and Commitments is revised before the Y10 exam.
  • In Science, ethical considerations regarding genetics form part of the GCSE Science modules.

Years 12 and 13:

  • In accordance with guidelines in the Catholic Education Service’s document ‘Guidelines for Education in Relationship and Sex Education in Schools’ delivery of RSE in the sixth form is currently being revised. Once updated, information will be made available here.
